We Energies is the leader in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electric energy in an area of about 12,000 square miles, including all of southeastern Wisconsin. The total estimated population of the area is more than two million, which includes metropolitan Milwaukee.
Electric rates for We Energies’ industrial customers are lower than most major US cities. Out of 205 investor owned utilities, 156 companies have higher industrial rates than We Energies. Electric rates for commercial customers are also very competitive. Out of 205 investor owned utilities, 150 companies have higher commercial rates than We Energies. Northern Illinois companies often expand in Wisconsin for a number of reasons, including We Energies’ relatively low rates. For example, in the winter of 1998 the average cost (cents per KWH) for industrial customers served by Commonwealth Edison was 6.10 while only 3.87 for We Energies’ customers. For commercial customers, the average cost (cents per KWH) for Commonwealth Edison customers was 8.33 while only 5.77 for We Energies customers for the same period.
